Project 1 - Discovery Draft
In a constantly changing college campus, communication is an essential part of my community. As a college student, I am constantly trying to communicate with others as efficiently and effectively as possible. Employing multiple genres of communication, the Florida State Community seeks to promote ideas and events as well as spark debate about issues. A genre of communication is a method through which a group or person can communicate with and influence their target audience. Different genres of communication are tailored to the audience they are trying to reach. When trying to reach a certain group or demographic, the behavioral trends as well as the interests of this group must be considered before choosing a genre of communication. For example, people communicate with their professors differently then they communicate with their friends. Some of the genres that are used for communication with students and professors are Blackboard and email. They are useful outlets for this type of communication because they are the quickest and most professional method of communicating with a professor. Some of the genres that are used for student only communication are text message, GroupMe, Facebook and Instagram. Although these are less professional and more informal, they are outlets that my generation are constantly checking and warrant speedy responses. Some of the genres that are used for communication through out the entire community are email, posters, flyers, signs and side walk chalk messages. These indirect genres of communication are better suited to reach a wider audience because anyone who is walking around the FSU campus could be informed. Overall, the Florida State University communicating incorporates diverse genres of communication to reach audiences of different backgrounds, beliefs, and interests.
