Project 3 - Reflection
When first hearing about Project 3 I thought it was going to be easy, but I was very wrong. The first problem I had was getting off to a late start. Since I had to redo Project 2, I did not know which one of my topics I was going to do. My first attempt of Project 3 was based on travel to New York City. I created a map and a travel brochure. Little did I know, maps are not considered to be a genre. I needed to create a genre that would communicate the overall message of my project. Thankfully, after many emails back and fourth, Mat told me that would not work and pointed me in the right direction.
With only three days left until Project 3 was due, I finally decided on the topic of Florida State University’s School of Medicine. After doing much research on genres, I was ready to start. Since a genre is a way in which a message is communicated, I decided to create a poster, a comic and a t-shirt all relating to Florida State University’s College of Medicine. The poster I created probably took twice as long as my classmates posters and did not look nearly as good because I was unaware of the cite called Piktochart. Due to this, I created my poster in Adobe Photoshop from scratch, no template or anything. I also used Adobe Illustrator to design the t-shirt. To throw another genre in there, I included an acrostic poem of the words “med student” on the back of the t-shirt. However, the genre that took me the longest was definitely the comic. I am not the best artist so it took me quite some time to draw all of those pictures. The pictures are not great, but I think my bad drawings make the comic even funnier.
After my multiple attempts at Project 3, I think I finally understand the meaning of a genre. My poster, comic and t-shirt all communicated the message of what it is like to be a med student at FSU. Overall, I am happy with how all three of my genres and both of my blogs turned out. Not only this project, but also this class in general has been challenging. I now know what a genre truly is and will forever think it as a way of communication rather than a type of movie.
