Quoting

When you are quoting something or someone you are copying what they said word for word. It is important to put quotation marks around the quotes that you use because you can get in trouble for plagiarism. It is also important to give the author of the quote credit.

Summarizing

When you are summarizing you are portraying the same ideas as the source you are using, but in your own words. It is important to give credit to the author of the source because you are using their ideas.

Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing is a good technique to use when you want to talk about the same thing as someone but not directly quote him or her. To paraphrase it is helpful if you read the source you are using and then put it away while you write down notes from memory. This will help to make sure you don’t copy anything word for word.

How to paraphrase

1. Read or listen to the source

2. Put the source away and write down as much as you can from the source from memory

3. Write sentences about the source in your own words

4. CITE THE SOURCE
